Two people have been bailed following a serious dog attack in Hemlington.

Officers were called to Hemlington Lake on Sunday (June 28) after a dog walker was approached and attacked by an unaccompanied Pitbull type dog.

The owner of the dog was bitten during the ordeal and is now receiving hospital treatment - with her dog seriously injured and taken for emergency surgery.

Cleveland Police said yesterday that, due to the risk posed to members of the public, it was forced to put the attacking dog down.

A man and a woman, both in their 30s, were arrested yesterday in connection with the incident and have since been interviewed and bailed.

The force said enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the event and is in contact with experts who will carry out tests to establish the breed of the attacking dog.

"We will issue further updates as soon as we are in a position to", a spokesperson said.
