Person airlifted to hospital after Wolsingham A689 crash

A person has been airlifted to hospital following a crash on the A689 in County Durham.

Emergency services were called to a collision on the A-road, near Wolsingham, at around 1pm this afternoon (June 27).

The road was closed in both directions near Wolsingham Showground, with traffic affected between the town and Harperley roundabout.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed that one patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by air ambulance for further treatment.

A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 1.03pm on Saturday, June 27, to reports of a road traffic incident on the A689 near Wolsingham in County Durham.

“We dispatched an ambulance crew and a clinical team leader to the scene, and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

“One patient was taken to James Cook hospital by air for further treatment.”

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance added: "Our critical care team was activated at 1.23pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the A689 near Wolsingham.

"We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 1.37pm.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient and airlifted them to hospital."

Bus services were also impacted while the road remained closed.

The road has now reopened.
