A council has allayed fears that a former grammar school has turned into a graveyard for musical instruments.

The building on Grammar School Lane in Northallerton was more recently used as a Covid-19 vaccine site during the pandemic.

But a resident has raised concerns the building had been turned into a dumping ground for old musical instruments.

They said: "For the last few years, we have seen a room full of unused musical instruments.

"As a parent of musicians, it breaks my heart to see these things being wasted. There are yet more piled up in the entrance lobby, too."

The council confirmed the instruments are in use.

North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for property procurement, Kerry Metcalfe, said: “We use this building as a storage facility for instruments owned by our music service within North Yorkshire and York music hub.

“The instruments are regularly used by schools across the county as part of our musical instrument programme, as well as for ensembles, individual and group lessons and other activities to support music education.”
