Beamish Museum nominated for national fish and chips award

The chippy, located in the museum’s 1910s village, is a finalist in the Most Historic Fish and Chip Shop category at the first English Fish and Chips Awards, which celebrate heritage, tradition, and culinary impact.

A spokesperson for the museum said: "We’re thrilled to see that Davy’s Fried Fish Shop has been named as a finalist in the Most Historic Fish and Chip Shop at this year’s English Fish and Chips Awards.

"Well done to our food and beverage team for achieving this amazing result."

Visitors have been heaping praise on the fish and chips at Beamish Museum, including influencers from as far afield as the United States, who have branded the offerings at the County Durham attraction as 'better than Whitby'.

A spokesman for the English Fish and Chips Awards said: "Few dishes capture the nation’s heart like fish and chips – golden, crispy, and steeped in culture.

"These awards honour the dedicated friers, family businesses, mobile operators, and innovators keeping this proud tradition alive."

The award category recognises establishments that reflect "longevity, heritage, and a lasting contribution to Britain’s culinary story."

Other nominees include Angel Lane Chippie in Cumbria, Bob Carvers in Hull, Knights Fish Restaurant in Somerset, and The Skyliner in Leeds.

The awards aim to celebrate the iconic dish and the dedicated people who bring it to life in communities across England.
