Person dies after being hit by train between Northallerton and York

A person has died after being hit by a train at Northallerton.

Emergency services were called to the town's railway station around 2.50pm today (May 18).

Sadly, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson from The British Transport Police said: “Officers were called at around 2.50pm today (May 18) to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Northallerton railway station.

“Officers responded with paramedics, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Rail operators say services through the area could be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes with disruption expected until around 5pm.

A spokesperson for LNER said: “Services are currently disrupted due to a person being hit by a train between Northallerton and York.

“Trains running may be delayed, altered or cancelled at short notice. This disruption is expected to last until 5pm.

“Please check your entire journey before you travel.”

Services between York and Darlington, Middlesbrough and Sunderland, are affected with all lines closed while emergency services are at the scene.

Road transport is being requested to operate between York and Newcastle in both directions, covering all intermediate stations.

  • Avanti West Coast between London Euston, Manchester and Glasgow Central/Edinburgh
  • TransPennine Express between Manchester, Leeds and York/Newcastle
  • Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle
  • CrossCountry between Sheffield, Doncaster/Leeds, York and Newcastle/Edinburgh
