Search the Public Notice PortalPictures from Darlington’s long-awaited new railway station opening captured a buzzing atmosphere as huge crowds turned out to celebrate the £140 million project which has been years in the making.
Hundreds gathered across the new platforms and concourse, with pictures showing visitors exploring the upgraded station and taking in its new, modern design, including the new entrance.
The long-anticipated development aims to boost job opportunities and strengthen transport links across the region and to London.
The station will officially open to the public this Sunday (May 17).
Photos from the day also show musical performances from The Royal Regiment of the Fusiliers band and Durham Music, which entertained visitors and added to the celebratory atmosphere.
A highlight captured in the pictures is the appearance of the much-loved steam locomotive Tornado.
Other pictures show a special train journey to York departing as part of the day’s events, marking the station’s improved connectivity which included refreshments and onboard entertainment.
Guest speakers including Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, Darlington MP Lola McEvoy and rail minister Lord Hendy can also be seen addressing the crowds, praising the scheme as a major investment in the North East.

MP Lola McEvoy said: “This absolutely cements it with the connectivity that we need, £140 million, and so many hours and hours of work. I just want to pay tribute to everybody who has put so much graft into this.
“I think it's really important because for visitors and for investors, this is going to mark us out as a place to come and visit and enjoy and build."
