A well-established post office in County Durham has been put up for sale.

Murton Post Office, at 21 Woods Terrace East, could be yours for £120,000.

The owners, who have run the business since 2002, are looking to retire.

The property is a detached, ground-floor lock-up in a busy area, providing a rare freehold opportunity, which generates a commission of approximately £52,000 annually.

However, the premises offers more than just the usual post office services.

It is a 'mains' post office, which means it also provides passport and driving licence services.

The closure of a local bank has increased footfall to the post office, with both local businesses and customers using its services more frequently, with an external ATM machine also forming part of the post office's offerings.

Inside, the trading area is equipped with one till and a secure mains post office counter.

There is also a greeting cards gantry, an upright drinks chiller, a stationery display, and a small selection of crafts and sowing items, with a lottery terminal and scratch cards also available.

However, the current owner has chosen not to introduce convenience items, confectionary, or alcohol, which a new owner may want to consider, subject to the necessary permissions.

The property also includes an inner office, a stock room, and a staff toilet.

All fixtures and fittings are included in the sale, except for items owned by a third party or personal to the current owners.

The post office is currently run by the owner and three part-time staff members.

The current trading hours are Monday and Tuesday from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm, and closed on Sundays.

The transfer of a post office appointment is at the sole discretion of the Post Office Network.
