A man has admitted causing serious injury to a pensioner due to careless driving before fleeing the scene and torching his car.

Luke Scott admitted being behind the wheel of the car before abandoning it and trying to set it alight in a desperate attempt to destroy evidence.

The 34-year-old left the pensioner with serious injuries following the collision with his black Ford Fiesta on Northallerton High Street at about 8.15pm on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.

His co-accused, Hayley Richardson, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of perverting the course of justice by assisting in the attempted destruction of evidence.

Paul Newcombe, prosecuting, asked for time to allow the Crown Prosecution Service to consider the pleas entered by both defendants.

Judge Nathan Adams adjourned the case after Scott pleaded not guilty to the more significant charge of causing serious injury due to dangerous driving.

At the time, North Yorkshire Police confirmed the Fiesta suffered significant damage to its windscreen in the incident.

Scott, of Brickside Way, Northallerton, and 34-year-old Richardson, of Berry Close, Great Yarmouth, were released on bail.

They will return to court on June 2 to learn their fate.
