A regional trade union office has been renamed in honour of a prison officer who served in the North East and North Yorkshire and went on to become a leading figure in the movement.

The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) has renamed its northern regional office in Leeds “Joe Simpson House” in memory of its former deputy general secretary, who began his career at Manchester Strangeways before serving at Holme House in Stockton and Northallerton.

Joe Simpson was a dedicated union activist who rose through the ranks of the POA and became a respected national leader.

Steve Gillan, general secretary of the POA, said: "Renaming our North Regional Office Simpson House is a fitting tribute to Joe.

"It means his name will be remembered in the history of the POA – it is a very appropriate way to recognise my colleague and friend who I knew for over 30 years."

A ceremony to mark the renaming was held in Leeds, attended by Mr Simpson’s partner Emma, family, friends and colleagues.

Mr Simpson was known for his deep commitment to the trade union movement and his lifelong work on behalf of members, earning him widespread respect across the profession.

He was described as someone who stood up unflinchingly for what he believed in.

Mark Fairhurst, chair of the POA, said: "Joe was not only a true trade unionist, he was also a true friend.

"He always had time for everyone and was unwavering in his support for POA members and his campaigning on the issues that affected us all.

"I am so proud that his name will live on within the POA and the naming of Simpson House would have put a big smile on Joe’s face.

"We all miss Joe dearly."
