Jasper's Tasty Treats Darlington opens on Blackwellgate

Ruth Middleton, the owner of Jasper’s Tasty Treats, celebrated the opening of the Blackwellgate premises today (May 1) having relocated from the Indoor Market.

The business, named in memory of her late beagle Jasper, sells 100 per cent natural, grain-free dog treats, as well as a range of pet accessories, including harnesses, collars, leads, coats, beds and toys under her Pretty Paws brand.

Ruth said: “I am beyond excited to finally be open.

“The shop has that country, boutique feel and I can’t wait for people to come in and see it.

“I’ll also be advising customers about treats and what’s safe for their pets, especially if they have allergies.”

The move follows a successful run at the Indoor Market, where Ruth said her stall “did really, really well” after opening in October before footfall declined after Christmas.

She said the lack of promotion and support made it difficult to sustain her business there, prompting her to look for a permanent base.

The Market was previously contacted for comment but did not respond in time for publication.

Ruth said: “Coming here made perfect sense and felt like the natural next step.

“There’s a real community of dog owners around Blackwellgate and the space is perfect for the type of boutique I want to create. I’ve got room to expand and build the business further.”

The shop has been fully refurbished, with new flooring, paint and fittings throughout, and Ruth also plans to dedicate a small corner to cats to make sure the boutique caters for all kinds of pet owners.

The shop will continue to offer hand-crafted, freshly prepared treats, while Pretty Paws provides a fitting service for harnesses and collars to make sure pets get the right size.

Ruth said she hopes to eventually franchise the brand and expand into other towns and cities, as well as showcase her products at larger trade events.

She said: “I’ve always loved dogs, so this is really my dream come true.

“It’s been a lot of work, but I’m so excited to welcome people into the shop and share my passion with the community.”

The boutique, on Blackwellgate, will be giving out freebies to pet owners throughout the weekend.
