A new children’s book written and illustrated by a North East artist is at the heart of a fundraising campaign to support mental health charity YoungMinds.

Baxter Bunny & the Weight of the World is created by Houghton-le-Spring artist Bethany Louise Hughes, who is using the book launch to raise awareness and funds for the UK charity at an event on Saturday, May 2.

Ms Hughes, a University of Sunderland graduate with a Master of Arts in Fine Art, said: "I have always been passionate about both visual art and creative writing, and this book has allowed me to bring those passions together in support of a cause very close to my heart."

The book launch will take place at The White Lion in Houghton-le-Spring from 12pm to 2pm and is dedicated to Thomas Jackson, who died by suicide in 2020 while studying in Sunderland.

Ms Hughes said: "This project has been created with the hope of encouraging conversations about mental health and supporting young people who may be struggling."

The fully hand-illustrated storybook delivers a gentle message about mental health and emotional wellbeing for children, teenagers, and young adults.

It emphasises the importance of speaking openly, reassuring readers that "it is okay not to feel okay," and encourages sharing worries with trusted friends or adults.

The book also features a section directing readers to UK mental health resources and support services.

Digital editions are available free of charge, with readers invited to make voluntary donations through Ms Hughes’ JustGiving page.

All proceeds go to YoungMinds, which supports the mental health of children and young people across the UK.

A charity raffle will also take place during the event.

Ms Hughes, who is the current Mrs Glamour North East and will represent the region at the Miss Glamour UK finals in May, said: "I’m very excited to release my book to the public on Saturday and I’m hoping for a great turnout."

A limited print run of the book will be available for purchase at the event for £5 per copy.

Of this, £3.50 will be donated to YoungMinds and the remainder will cover printing costs.

Attendees will also be able to view an exhibition of Ms Hughes’ original hand-painted illustrations from the book.

The event will include a short talk on the inspiration behind the project and the wider importance of mental health awareness.

Ms Hughes said that anyone unable to attend but wishing to support the campaign can still make a donation.

She said: "If anyone is unable to attend the launch event but would still like to donate to YoungMinds in support of my book, you can do so here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/baxterbunnyyoungminds/"

Ms Hughes’ artwork is displayed across Sunderland, including at Cooper Rose and the Minerva Arts & Wellbeing Hub.

Her broader campaign platforms include #BeTheBestYou and a focus on mental health awareness.
