Catching up over lunch doesn’t happen often enough, so when my brother and I finally found a free Saturday, we made it count with a trip to Cork & Coffee in Seaham.

The timing couldn’t have been better. With spring sunshine making a convincing case for summer, the venue’s newly expanded outdoor seating area was already pulling in a crowd.

We hadn’t booked, but managed to snag a table in the front window - arguably the best seat in the house for uninterrupted views of Seaham’s coastline and the steady stream of visitors stopping by the Tommy statue for a selfie or a picnic.

The drinks decision was immediate. Two-for-£16 cocktails are hard to ignore, so we opted for Blueberry Ice Teas - more punchy than tea-like, but sweet and refreshing enough to justify the name.

Food-wise, I kept things simple with a chicken Caesar salad, leaning into that rare urge to eat “healthier” when the sun’s out. It didn’t disappoint: generous portions of roasted chicken, properly crisp croutons (arguably the highlight), and a liberal helping of dressing - perhaps slightly heavy on the vinegar taste towards the end, but still enjoyable.

My brother, showing no such restraint, went for the hot halloumi and prosciutto flatbread. Cork & Coffee is known more for charcuterie and grazing boards than substantial mains, so both dishes arriving as generously as they did was a welcome surprise.

His flatbread, layered with prosciutto, grilled halloumi and a hot honey base, struck a near-perfect balance between sweet and savoury. Even better, it wasn’t overpoweringly spicy - good news for those of us who don’t handle heat particularly well.

In a rare turn of events, I was even allowed to try some. Usually, that would be off-limits - my brother isn’t known for sharing food, but the portion size worked in my favour.

To be truthful, wish I had got his order - it was packed with flavour, and I'm already planning another visit to order the flatbread. His official verdict? “The bread is a good thickness.” High praise from him, all things considered.

Cork & Coffee continues to deliver on atmosphere as much as it does on food. With its sleek interior, dark neutral tones and touches of emerald green, it feels a step above your standard wine bar.

Add in chandeliers, booth seating and a menu packed with charcuterie boards, burgers and small plates, and you’ve got a place that manages to feel both refined and relaxed - somewhere you can sip cocktails while still happily getting stuck in.

It’s the kind of venue where you never quite order what you planned, because something else on the menu always catches your eye - and that’s half the charm.

From the moment we walked in, the staff were attentive, welcoming, and, most importantly, quick to take our order—less time waiting for staff and more time to catch up with my brother.
