You don’t so much visit Ambleside as arrive in the middle of something timeless. Cobbled corners, the shimmer of Windermere just down the hill, and peaks rising like old acquaintances in every direction - it’s the Lake District at its most postcard-perfect.

Its transformation into one of the Lakes’ most inviting retreats has been done with care and craft - maintaining all the warmth of its history while creating a modern haven that feels purpose-built for unwinding.
Step through the doors and you enter an atmosphere that instantly exudes calm. The bustle of Ambleside fades to a murmur. The lobby’s soft light, polished oak and gentle hum of conversation set the tone for what the Salutation does best: blending the ease of a classic country hotel with the indulgence of a contemporary spa resort.
A base that’s its own destination
The hotel’s location could hardly be better. You’re right in the centre of Ambleside, with cafes, bookshops and fell-walkers’ outfitters all on the doorstep. Wander out after breakfast and you’re minutes from some of the best walking in the Lakes. Loughrigg Fell rises temptingly just to the west, a perfect short climb with views stretching to Grasmere and Rydal Water.
For families, the gentle lakeshore paths along Windermere are ideal for lazy strolls or picnics by the jetty. And if you’re here for a longer stay, the hotel sits perfectly central for day trips to Coniston, Ullswater or Keswick - each one offering its own slice of Cumbrian charm.
But to treat the Salutation as just a springboard would be to miss the point. Because once you’ve settled in, there’s every reason to simply stay put.

Breakfast was a particularly pleasing experience. My family were so well catered for with care and attention – and even a Cumberland sausage for Jasper our cockapoo.
A gem in the Lakes’ crown
