Two North East beaches have been rated unsafe for swimming ahead of the summer heat.
Littlehaven Beach in South Shields and Cullercoats Bay in North Tyneside have been flagged as having ‘poor’ water quality, raising concerns for beachgoers.
The warning comes as temperatures begin to rise across the UK, increasing the likelihood of visitors heading to the coast, and after Roker beach in Sunderland was named one of the cleanest in the country.
Martin Danemaq, spokesman for travel site Locals Insider, said: "Coastal areas across the North East have received plenty of positive attention in recent months, but our research shows that water quality can vary significantly even within short distances, with Littlehaven and Cullercoats Bay falling short of the minimum Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs ratings.
"As temperatures begin to rise across the UK and more people head back to the seaside, it’s important that beachgoers are aware of which locations may pose a risk for swimming.
"A ‘poor’ classification doesn’t necessarily reflect how a beach looks, but it does indicate that entering the water is not recommended."
The ratings, based on Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) data, classify both beaches as 'poor' under the current bathing water standards.
The classifications are based on water samples taken between May and September, using data collected over a four-year period.

Last year, both sites received a Brown Flag from Holiday Park Guru.
North Tyneside and South Tyneside councils have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to improve water quality at the affected locations.
Only 20 UK beaches currently hold this lowest rating.
