A County Durham Chinese restaurant has been handed a food hygiene rating of one.

Fortune Inn, in Middlestone Moor, near Spennymoor, was told major improvement was necessary following an inspection on February 9.

The Durham Road venue - known for its "delicious" food and all you can eat deal - is located in the former Masons Arms pub, which closed several years ago before being taken over.

While the Fortune Inn was ranked generally satisfactory in terms of its cleanliness and the condition of the facilities and building, it fell short in other categories.

The management of food safety, which looks at the checks in place to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat and staff food safety knowledge, was rated 'major improvement necessary.

Meanwhile the hygienic food handling, including food preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage, was ranked 'improvement necessary'.

Fortune Inn boasts a four-star rating on Google Reviews, with customers praising the venue for its "good service" and "extremely good value".

One person said: "Great food, value for money, and friendly staff. A must try to anyone who loves Chinese cuisine."

The Northern Echo has contacted Durham County Council for the full inspection report.
