A police helicopter was spotted over parts of the North East this afternoon following a disturbance on a bus in Sunderland.

The police helicopter was spotted over Washington and Houghton le Spring following reports a man had made verbal threats towards a female passenger.

The man, 19, got off the bus and then is said to have become involved in other public order incidents in Houghton-le-Spring and Washington.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 12.45pm today (Monday), we received a report of a disturbance on board a bus travelling on the A183 Chester Road in Sunderland.

“It was reported that a male passenger had made verbal threats towards a female passenger, before exiting the bus in the Bournmoor area.

“Officers were deployed to locate the man in question, who was understood to have gone on to become involved in other public order incidents in Houghton le Spring and Washington.”

Northumbria Police were supported by the National Police Air Service in searching for the suspect.

He was arrested a short time later on Newbottle Street, Houghton le Spring, on suspicion of a public order offence.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson added: “He remains in police custody at this time, and enquiries are ongoing.”
