FOUR-LEGGED fundraisers and their humans are being invited to take part in charity ‘walkies’ at a North East railway museum.

The Paws Aboard fundraising dog walk in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice, in Darlington, will lead participants on a 5km route in aid of the end-of-life care charity.

Starting from the Hopetown Darlington museum, the planned route will take walkers along the banks of the River Skerne, and through the five arches railway bridge, and loop back to the museum – where doggy-themed stalls and activities will be on display.

Nicola Myers, chief executive of St Teresa’s Hospice, said: “Our big charity dog walk was a beloved annual event in Darlington, and we’re thrilled to be bringing it back in a new form with Paws Aboard!

“We’re especially excited that Hopetown is hosting this new event during our 40th anniversary year, which coincides with its own ongoing celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the railways.”

The event will take place on Sunday, May 10 at Hopetown from 10:30am. Tickets cost £10 per dog, with additional dogs in the same family charged at £3 each.

An alternative route will also be available for humans and dogs who prefer a shorter walk, while walkers who can’t make the event can also take part virtually in their own time.

All dogs who take part – at Hopetown and virtually – will receive a goody bag and commemorative pet bandana.

“This is really shaping up to be a first-class event,” added Nicola, “and a great chance to celebrate the impact our pets have on our lives.

“We have therapy dogs that visit the hospice regularly, and we see how much of an impact our furry friends can have on physical and mental health.

“This is a wonderful chance to celebrate the important role dogs play in our lives, enjoy a walk through our town’s history, and raise money for our beloved hospice.”
