We asked AI to predict result of next week's Tyne-Wear derby

AI tool Perplexity has told us what it believes the result will be when the teams reunite for their second clash this season.

Perplexity believes it will be a narrow Newcastle United victory at St James’ Park.

Based on current goal numbers, shot data and market models, the most likely outcome is a 2–1 home win, the tool said, with Newcastle’s superior attacking output just about outweighing Sunderland’s stubbornness.

Nick Woltemade, Newcastle’s leading fit league scorer this season (with only injured captain Bruno Guimarães ahead of him in the charts) and the focal point of their attack, is rated the most probable first goalscorer - making amends for his embarrassing own goal in the reverse fixture.

In our AI storyboard he strikes on 28 minutes, converting a spell of early pressure in front of a raucous Gallowgate End.

Harvey Barnes, one of Newcastle’s most productive wide forwards, is picked out as the man to settle it late on – his tendency to attack tired defenders makes him a logical choice to grab a 76th‑minute winner in a stretched game, AI said.

But Sunderland are very much in the script of the match still.

The model singles out Wilson Isidor as their likeliest threat, reflecting his position among the club’s leading scorers and his high volume of shots on target.

In this version of events he levels the match on 58 minutes, punishing Newcastle on the break as the visitors come out braver after half‑time.

So the AI’s imagined timeline runs: Woltemade on 28 minutes, Isidor on 58, Barnes on 76 - a derby that stays tight, emotional and noisy, but ends with Newcastle edging it 2–1.
