University of Sunderland unveils £2.4m library makeover

The Library at Murray, part of the University of Sunderland and located in the Murray Heath building, has undergone a major upgrade to improve the student learning environment.

The six-month project aimed to create a peaceful, comfortable, and focused space to support academic success.

It was developed in close consultation with students, with thousands of suggestions collected over the past seven years, through the university's annual Big Talk to the Library survey.

Rachel Dolan, assistant director of student journey (libraries and learner development) at the University of Sunderland, said: "Reimagining the Library at Murray with our students has been truly inspiring.

"The new library reflects what matters to them, and we hope it provides study space that supports their learning, wellbeing, and success."

The refurbishment includes new heating and lighting systems, a brand-new ceiling, and acoustic baffles designed to reduce noise levels.

New areas for group and individual study have been created, alongside improvements such as enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity, study pods with built-in whiteboards, height-adjustable desks, and a new helpdesk to support both students and staff.

"It combines the best of a ‘traditional’ library and study environment, with the latest equipment and facilities.

"I am sure that it will be popular with students, reinforcing our commitment to put them at the heart of all we do."

The consultation process included targeted workshops with student representatives to explore preferences in colour, layout, and furniture, helping to develop a space tailored to a wide range of study habits and needs.

The new library is now fully open and ready for use.
