Storm, emaciated greyhound, found in Darlington property

An emaciated dog was found covered in his own faeces in a Darlington house.

Storm, a four-year-old greyhound, was rescued by the RSPCA after police entered a property in the Darlington area last October.

The frightened dog was found sheltering in a bedroom strewn in faeces and was ravenously hungry, the charity says.

Weighing just 18.5kg (40.78lbs), Storm was immediately taken to a vet and given the lowest possible body condition score of one out of nine.

RSPCA Inspector Heidi Cleaver said:  “Rubbish and faeces were strewn throughout, and I didn’t see any evidence of dog food.

 “We found Storm sheltering upstairs in one of the bedrooms. There was nowhere clean for him to rest, and he was so very hungry he ravenously ate a treat I offered him.

 “His skin looked very scabby and sore, and I could see live fleas crawling throughout his coat.

“He was clearly in a malnourished state. His hips, ribs and spine were easily visible, and it was obvious he needed urgent care.”

 The RSPCA said it had carried out extensive enquiries, but Storm’s owner has not yet been traced.

Since receiving care from the RSPCA’s Great Ayton Animal Centre, Storm was treated for dermatitis and now tips the scales at 31kg (68.34lbs).

Staff say he has come on “leaps and bounds” and loves everyone he meets.

 The centre's Behaviour Welfare Advisor, Emma Cosby, said: “Storm had to be placed on a strict re-feeding regimen which involved giving him a high-quality diet and small meals frequently.

“As he gained weight, he was able to start going out for walks and we gradually built up his exercise routine to help him get some of his strength back.  

 “He’s such a lovable gentleman with so much to give. He thrives on attention and will happily soak up all the fuss he receives from our team.

“At heart, he's a total couch potato and would make a loyal and loving companion for someone looking for a gentle, affectionate best friend.”

However, since being put up for adoption, Storm has sadly received few enquiries.

Emma added: “If you're looking for an affectionate and slightly goofy companion who will fill your home with love and take up most of your sofa, Storm could be the one for you."

Storm can live with older children and possibly another dog, depending on successful meets at the centre. 

 He can be strong on the lead if he spots small animals and is currently muzzled on walks for this reason.

It is strongly recommended that his future adopters continue using a muzzle when they are out and about with him.
