Here are some of the people locked up at Teesside Crown Court last month.
Those jailed include drug dealers, violent offenders and sexual deviants.
'Frosty Glove'
A Darlington cocaine dealer who was caught when the EncroChat network was smashed handled more than 20 kilos of the class A drug, a court heard.
John Jackson, who used the name Frosty Glove, on the encrypted mobile phone network dealt with more than £750,000 worth of the drug over three-month period.
When police searched the 42-year-old’s Darlington home they recovered drugs and cash.
Jessica Slaughter, prosecuting, said the defendant was heavily involved in the supply of cocaine along with other co-conspirators.
Messages recovered from Jackson’s handset highlighted the amount of contact the pair had as they moved up to £779,000 worth of the class A drugs before police raided his then-home on Roseberry Street.
Jackson, formerly of Darlington, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine between March 28 and June 5, 2020, and possession with intent to supply cocaine on October 7 of the same year.
Judge Nathan Adams sentenced Jackson to ten years and six months in custody for his ‘significant involvement’ in supplying cocaine on a large scale.
Simon Martin
A drug dealer caught using a county lines mobile phone was working to pay off his own cocaine debt after threats were made to cut his 'head off’, a court heard.
Simon Martin would pick up the Class A drug from his supplier before delivering the cocaine to the customers and returning with the cash.
The 34-year-old drug addict used the mobile phone for at least two weeks last year when he was tasked with clearing his own £1,000 drug debt.
Emma Atkinson, prosecuting, said the defendant was arrested at his home but the mobile phone connected to the drug supply network was never recovered.
Miss Atkinson said Martin told police he had no influence over anyone in the supply network adding ‘they threatened to cut my head off if I refused to do it – I was scared for myself and my family’.
Martin, of Gilmour Street, Thornaby, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine and breaching his bail conditions when he failed to appear at a previous court hearing.
Recorder Judy Dawson sentenced the dad-of-three to a total of 20 months for both offences.
Shawna Kelly
A drug addict who helped a knife-wielding robber to steal booze, cigarettes and scratch cards from a shop has been locked up.
Shawna Kelly stuffed the stolen goods into a bag as her co-accused held a knife to the Shildon shop worker's stomach.
Teesside Crown Court heard how Michael Dent was the main instigator of the robbery of the Lifestyle Express store in Shildon on October 15 last year.
Tabitha Buck, prosecuting, said the shop worker, Gnanavel Sivakaran, bravely disarmed Kelly’s co-accused before they both fled the scene.
Kelly, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article on October 15 last year.
Recorder Ayesha Smart sentenced Kelly to 30 months in prison for her role in the armed robbery.
Christopher Fretter
A drug dealer who was caught selling out of a crack house has been locked up for peddling the "evil" drug.
Police officers watched a known drug addict turn up at the flat where Christopher Fretter was staying to secure his latest hit, Teesside Crown Court heard.
The 45-year-old told the user to push the cash through the letterbox before he could pick up his crack cocaine and then officers moved in to arrest the defendant.
Adrian Strong, prosecuting, said police initially recovered 35 deals of crack cocaine while further searches revealed cocaine hidden on his clothing as well as around £800 in cash.
Fretter, of Bishopton Lane, Stockton, pleaded guilty to two charges of possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class A – crack cocaine and cocaine.
Judge Amanda Rippon sentenced Fretter to three years in prison for both offences.
Darlington pervert
A depraved pervert who shared sickening videos of children, some just months old, being sexually abused has been jailed.
Thomas Corking was arrested when police searched his Darlington home and recovered digital devices with more than a thousand files of child sex abuse stashed away in the memory.
Teesside Crown Court heard how the 29-year-old’s partner, Ashley Robinson, was also arrested as part of the investigation and he will be sentenced at a later date.
Emma Atkinson, prosecuting, said more than 1,000 images and videos in Category A were recovered from the defendant’s digital devices and depicted children aged down to three months old being sexually abused.
The court heard how evidence was recovered of the defendant sharing indecent images via the Telegram app with texts to particular users outlining his deviant sexual proclivities, including fantasising about raping a child.
Corking, now of Rosslare Road, Stockton, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children in Category A – the most serious offence, one charge of making indecent images of children in Category B, one charge of making indecent images of children in Category C, a charge of possession of prohibited images and three charges of distribution of indecent images of children in Category A, B and C.
Recorder Andrew Haslam KC sentenced Corking to a total of 28 months for all offences.
He said: “The exploitation of children, particularly as young as those in this case, are always viewed as serious offences."
Child rapist
A child rapist has been locked up for 17 years after ruining a girl’s life through systematic sexual abuse.
Robert Tempest was convicted of carrying out a series of depraved acts on the child after a jury listened to the heartbreaking testimony during his trial.
The 52-year-old admitted raping the child on one occasion but denied carrying out repeated rapes and sexual assaults, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Dr Christopher Wood, prosecuting, said Tempest preyed on the child several years ago before the victim revealed the extent of the abuse she suffered at his hands.
The court heard how he used a series of threats to make his victim comply with his deviant behaviour.
Judge Advocate Tom Mitchell told Tempest he had committed some of the worst offending possible as he sentenced him to 17 years in custody.
“You pleaded guilty to one charge of rape but that was the extent that you were prepared to admit – that was only a small vulgar fraction of what you did,” he said.
Sick fantasy
A sick pervert who tried to watch a livestream of a child being raped was caught in an undercover police sting.
John McAdams struck up an online conversation with a man pretending to have access to a ten-year-old girl and offered him the chance to watch her being sexually abused.
As soon as the 65-year-old logged into the livestream police raided his Stockton home and arrested him after admitting he wanted to watch the abuse, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Tabitha Buck, prosecuting, said he was arrested at his home address and had a number of his devices seized as part of the investigation which led to the discovery of indecent images of both children and animals.
McAdams, of Rollesby Way, Stockton, pleaded guilty to arranging the commission of a child sex offence, attempt to engage in sexual communication with a child, making and distributing indecent images of children, and possessing extreme/indecent images of animals between September 12 and October 9 last year.
Nicci Horton, mitigating, said her client had admitted the offences immediately and had made no attempt to excuse his behaviour.
“You had developed a significant sexual interest in children, you believed you had communicated with somebody who shared that sexual interest,” he said.
Sexual assault
A young man who groped a child’s bottom after following him as he pushed his bike up a hill has been ordered to sign on the sex offenders’ register.
Jamie Found approached the youngster as he made his way towards the shops in Skelton, Teesside Crown Court heard.
The victim thought his 25-year-old attacker was on drugs when he carried out the assault, said Emma Atkinson, prosecuting.
“The defendant approached the complainant, who described how he had been following him,” she added."
Found, formerly of Skelton in East Cleveland, pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault.
She said: “What you pleaded to is a very serious offence and you know now that the boy was really frightened by what happened."
Found was also ordered to attend 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days, made subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order and told to sign on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
Child abuse
A pervert threatened to post a mother’s video of her child on the dark web if she didn’t sexually abuse them for his depraved gratification.
Gabriel Nile made contact with the victim before befriending them on social media and gaining access to her posted videos.
The 22-year-old made that "deeply unpleasant and sinister threat" shortly after making contact with the victim, who lives outside North East.
Teesside Crown Court heard how the mother had posted an innocent video of their child and shared it with close friends and relatives.
When the victim confronted Nile about his behaviour he replied - he "wanted a picture of the woman playing with her child ‘down below’.
Ian Windridge, prosecuting, said Nile then attempted to blackmail the woman threatening to post the video on the dark web.
Judge Francis Laird KC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, sentenced Nile to a total of 30 months in prison for both offences.
He told the defendant he had made a ‘deeply unpleasant and sinister threat’ to the victim.
Quadbike attack
A man was thrown through the air when a woman deliberately rode her quadbike into his bike before delivering a volley of punches.
Megan Douglas then grabbed the battery off the bike and smashed it across the head of her victim before police were called.
Teesside Crown Court heard the 29-year-old was a ‘feisty’ character but had no history of violence on her criminal record.
Cainan Lonsdale, prosecuting, said the victim suffered a number of injuries and required medical treatment.
Douglas, of Cresswell Road, Grangetown, near Redcar, pleaded guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent on July 10 last year.
John Nixon, mitigating, said his client had several run-ins with the victim previously and had pleaded guilty to the offence before a trial was listed.
He said: “You deliberately ran him down when he was on a bike before repeatedly punching him.”
Douglas was sentenced to three years in custody.
Stolen car
A Chilton man caused devastation when he smashed a stolen Kia into two cars as he tried to flee police during a high-speed chase in Darlington.
Carl Hollywood reached speeds in excess of 70mph in a 30mph zone as he weaved in and out of traffic after police spotted him driving the white Sportage along the A66.
The 36-year-old refused to pull over before accelerating away from the pursuing police vehicle leaving a trail of devastation as he came to a shuddering halt, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Reece Williams, prosecuting, said Hollywood drove along Yarm Road in Darlington at excessive speed before heading down McMullen Road, reaching around 70mph at times.
Hollywood, of Albert Street, Chilton, pleaded guilty to theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and assaulting an emergency worker following his arrest on December 9.
Tabitha Buck, mitigating, said her client accepts that he was in prison licence at the time of the offending but urged to judge to consider imposing a non-custodial sentence.
Judge Nathan Adams sentenced Hollywood to a total of 18 months for all offences.
Hollywood was also banned from driving for 45 months and told he must pass an extended driving test before returning to the roads.
Burglar tasered
A burglar was tasered by police before being caught with the keys for a stolen van parked up at his grandmother’s house, a court heard.
Joshua Winter and a co-accused claimed to have paid £150 for the Mercedes Sprinter van which was stolen from Sherburn Village and later traced by the owner using a tracker device.
Teesside Crown Court heard how the 23-year-old stole a number of tools from the van along with a tablet which were all recovered from the garden in Ludworth in County Durham.
Joe Hedworth said the defendant also carried out a burglary on Burns Street, Wheatley Hill at around the same time as the van was stolen.
He also admitted to breaching the terms of a community order imposed for a series of other offences.
Tony Davis, mitigating, said his client had a longstanding problem with drugs but had been making some progress on his community order.
Recorder Judy Dawson jailed Winter for a total of 16 months for all offences.
Repeat burglar
A would-be burglar who tried a number of door handles before walking away empty handed as he wandered the streets of Darlington has been locked up.
Carl Temple was caught on camera footage trying homes on Woodland Road and Elms Road as well as a garage and a parked car in the early hours of the morning.
The 48-year-old drug addict has a string of 105 convictions for 197 offences on his record including eight for burglary, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Temple, of Chester Terrace, Peterlee, pleaded guilty to three charges of attempted dwelling house burglary, one count of attempted non-dwelling house burglary and vehicle interference on July 26 last year.
Michele Turner, mitigating, said there had been a delay in sentencing to allow time for a psychiatric report to be compiled to determine whether the drug addict was fit to plead.
Judge Advocate Tom Mitchell sentenced Temple to a total of 14 months in custody for all offences.
“You are a habitual thief and to that litany you have eight dwelling house burglaries and 14 non-dwelling house convictions,” he said.
