The reason behind why white patches were spotted in a County Durham sewage treatment works has been revealed.

Northumbrian Water said "white fluffy looking patches" had been spotted at Ramshaw Sewage Treatment Works.

A picture posted by the water company on Facebook shows the water covered almost entirely in white patches.

The reason behind the white patches has now been revealed by Northumbrian Water.

Posting on Facebook, the water company said: "These white fluffy looking patches created a 'web' of mystery at our Ramshaw Sewage Treatment Works in County Durham recently.

"After a bit of investigation, they turned out to be a huge network of spider webs, made visible by the moisture droplets on the strands."
