A convicted rapist who repeatedly stabbed another HMP Durham inmate with a shank while waiting to be sentenced has been locked up for a further six years.
Robert Green was convicted of carrying out a string of sex offences after a sharp-eyed nurse realised something wasn’t right when the victim needed medical attention.
He was later jailed for 14 years after subjecting his victim to rape on multiple occasions and carrying out a series of horrifying assaults in the Newcastle area.
Teesside Crown Court how the 30-year-old carried out the brutal and sustained attack on January 20 last year while on remand awaiting his sentence.
Paul Cleasby, prosecuting, said Green launched the attack on his victim from behind as he walked through HMP Durham after accusing the victim’s son of sleeping with his girlfriend on the outside of prison.
He said: “He approached him from behind and repeatedly stabbed him in the neck with a sharply pointed metal implement.
“The victim turned to face the defendant and he stabbed him to the left-hand side of the abdomen.”
The victim said he feared that Green was intent on killing him after suffering three puncture wounds.
The court heard how the defendant passed the weapon to another inmate to hide but prison staff located it in the shower block.
Daniel Cordey, mitigating, said his client was now engaging with the mental help teams within the prison system.
He added: “It is early days for a man who is going to spend a long time in prison but he does seem to be trying to turn the corner and address the issues that he has.”

Recorder Taryn Turner told the defendant she had considered imposing a life sentence after hearing he was already categorised as a dangerous offender but had decided to step back from that option.
She said: “Without warning, you launched a forceful attack on him, striking your victim from behind with the clear intention of causing him really serious harm.
“The evidence shows you repeatedly targeted blows aimed at vulnerable areas of his body.
“The attack was sustained, targeted and unprovoked. Although, it was mercifully relatively short-lived and he was fortunate not to sustain more serious injuries.”
