New pictures have revealed the major works ongoing inside the asbestos-ridden Golden Eagle hotel ahead of its demolition.
Works are well underway to reduce the “eyesore” Thornaby hotel, on Trenchard Avenue, to rubble later this year.
The project to tear down the hotel has been years in the making, and was pushed back several times after damage was caused by break-ins and blazes.
Late last year, all items in the building were branded as hazardous material after a new survey revealed asbestos had spread across all of the floors.
It happened due to vandals removing copper piping, which was protected by asbestos-riddled panels, causing a water leak.
This means all items from the hotel, which is thought to have been built in 1969, have to be removed under controlled conditions.
The damage, which was uncovered when the building was handed over to the contractor last August, cost £600,000.
MGL Group are undertaking the works and asbestos removal on the ground floor is progressing well, Stockton Borough Council revealed this week.
The first three sections have been completed, and the team has now moved on to removal works on the first floor.
Once the full asbestos removal phase is finished, demolition is scheduled to begin in June, with hopes the building could be torn down by Autumn this year.
The Eagle has been shuttered for several years and is understood to have been run as a pub on the ground floor until the mid to late 2010s.
Before that, the site operated as a bar and hotel, the venue often hosted wedding receptions, birthday parties, and Christmas work parties over its decades-long run.
The council took control of the hotel in October 2024.

There are hopes for a food and beverage outlet to be built on the land once the building is knocked down; however, the decision will ultimately fall down to current town centre owner LCP Proudreed.
Meanwhile, construction of a new state-of-the-art leisure facility is set to begin on the site beside the hotel, which will connect into Thornaby Pavilion.
Appointed contractor Galliford Try is beginning the site set up, ahead of breaking ground in the next two weeks.
