A man has appeared in court charged with coercive and controlling behaviour.

John Crangle appeared at Teesside Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

The 45-year-old pleaded not guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour between January 1 and December 18 last year during the short hearing.

Judge Francis Laird KC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, remanded the defendant in custody until the date of three-day trial in the summer.

Crangle, formerly from the Hartlepool area, will appear at court again on June 8 when his case is listed for trial.
