A shoplifter who stole more than £1,000 worth of booze, meat, candles and a television to help fund her partner’s drug addiction has landed herself in court.
Laura Warner was caught shoplifting on six occasions in a month as she targeted Tesco stores in Newton Aycliffe and Tindale Crescent as well as One Beyond in Newton Aycliffe.
James Gallagher, prosecuting, said the 32-year-old had stolen meat and razors from the Newton Aycliffe Tesco before stealing £23 worth of goods from One Beyond.
Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ court heard how the defendant then targeted the Tesco at Tindale Crescent on four occasions where she stole £600 worth of booze, a £248 tv and £230 worth of scented candles.
He said: “Over a four-week period, more than £1,000 were taken from the shops.”
Warner, of Ravensworth Road, Ferryhill, pleaded guilty to six counts of shoplifting at Tesco and One Beyond between September 22 and October 25 last year.
Jaxon Taylor, mitigating, said his client was no longer in the toxic relationship and had committed no further offences.
He said: “She had been put under a significant amount of pressure to carry out the offences by her partner to feed his addiction.
“She has recently split from this partner following a period of sustained domestic violence and coercive control.

“There have been no further offences committed since the end of this toxic relationship.”
Colling Morris, the chairman of the bench, sentenced the defendant to a 12-month community order and was ordered to attend 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
He said: “You are not a prolific offender, so hopefully, we will be able to get you back on the right track.”
Warner was banned from entering the Tesco store at Tindale Crescent and ordered to pay £600 in compensation for the stolen goods.
