Woman dies at scene after A1 crash as police launch appeal

Officers received reports of a crash just before 8.40pm on Wednesday, January 28, involving one vehicle on the A1 at Highfields Roundabout, near to the junction with the A1167 North Road.

It was understood the driver of a black Peugeot 407 Coupe had been travelling southbound when, for reasons yet to be established, the car came off the road onto a nearby embankment.

Emergency services attended, where tragically a woman in her 40s died at the scene.

The driver, a man aged in his 40s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The woman’s next of kin continue to be offered support by officers.

A section of the A1 was closed for several hours between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Eyemouth but later re-opened to traffic.

Today (February 3), Northumbria Police have issued a second appeal for witnesses, particularly from anyone who saw the vehicle in Scotland earlier that day.

A spokesperson said: “We are especially keen to hear from drivers travelling between Dundee and Northumberland from approximately 2pm to 8.40pm, including those with dashcam footage.”

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident where a woman sadly lost her life,  and a man remains in a critical condition.

“We’ll continue to support their loved ones in any way we can.

“Our investigation has been progressing well, and now we’re keen to focus our attention to the driver’s movements ahead of the collision.

“We know this is a busy stretch of road between Northumberland and Scotland, so we’d urge people to try and think back, and check their CCTV or dashcam footage.”
