People living in Consett and Peterlee have been invited to share their hopes for the future and discuss the challenges facing the towns.
Durham County Council has launched its Strategic Place Plan (SPP) programme in the two towns following successful schemes elsewhere.
The new SPPs aim to create a vision for each town by identifying key plans and objectives specific to the area.
They have already been adopted in Spennymoor, Durham City, Shildon, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Stanley, Chester-le-Street and Crook.
Consett and Peterlee residents will be asked for their views on each area’s strengths and opportunities, what can be improved, and what they would like to see from the town in the future.
Councillor Karen Allison, cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, said: “Our SPPs will set out positive visions that are underpinned by our Economic Strategy.
They will give local people and businesses the chance to help shape the future of their town by creating an agreed plan built upon what they want to see change.
“So far, we have had really positive involvement from communities in the eight towns we have started developing plans for. Now we want to hear from people who live and work in Consett and Peterlee.”
Consett is one of the main centres in County Durham, with a population of around 30,000 residents, and has convenient access to Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead and Stanley.
Peterlee was established as a New Town in the late 1940s to provide modern housing and improved living conditions for miners from surrounding villages. Positioned on a plateau near Castle Eden Dene, the town is well connected to neighbouring communities including Horden, Shotton Colliery, Easington and Castle Eden.

A series of engagement events will be held over the next eight weeks, as well as an outreach programme to schools, businesses and other organisations.
The visions will be directly shaped by the people of Consett and Peterlee, with their views forming the basis of the plan, the council added.
