North Yorkshire pub with rooms named among England's best

The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton, just outside of York, was named by The Telegraph and praised for its restaurant serving “faultless gastropub fare” as well as its annexe of rustic barn-style rooms.

In one of its latest staycation guides the newspaper said: “There are few things more quintessentially British than a good pub.

“Pubs for long Sunday lunches and quick pints after work, pubs at the end of walks and to start the weekend.

“Once simple roadside inns for weary travellers, pubs with rooms have transformed radically into destinations in their own right, often more boutique hotels than basic boozers.

“Now there’s rolltop baths and Michelin-starred food, craft ales and curated wine lists as a new generation of publicans put their stamp on our local institutions.”

Located on the village green, The Alice Hawthorn was given a final (and impressive) score of 9/10.

The travel experts shared: “The pub at the heart of one of Yorkshire's prettiest villages has been reinvented with a restaurant serving faultless gastropub fare and an annexe of rustic barn-style rooms, which have won awards for their innovative and sustainable design.

“The bar area remains a place for locals to pop in for a pint, and perhaps a portion of freshly fried crisps.

“The eight new Garden rooms built at the back have been constructed out of corrugated iron and home-grown Douglas fir and feel more Norway than North Yorkshire, though they could pass for very chic farm buildings.”

On its website, the pub shares: “Discover your sanctuary in our RIBA award-winning garden rooms, or experience a touch of true Yorkshire history in our charming pub rooms.”

The garden rooms are constructed from homegrown Douglas fir and finished with timber inside and out, offering a “serene vibe”.

Meanwhile, the pub rooms are known for their “ambience” and inside each one, guests will find “beautiful” exposed beams as part of the Grade II listed building, alongside a “blissfully comfortable” super-king bed.

Additionally, the restaurant’s dining room brings together the “charm of an old country inn with a few gentle modern touches”.

The menus change throughout the year, celebrating each season with the “finest” local Yorkshire produce.

But what do recent visitors and guests think? On Tripadvisor it currently has more than 500 “excellent” reviews.

Someone said: “An absolute gem, off the beaten track, the pub is in a lovely village setting and beautifully restored.

“The staff were professional and attentive, the food was superbly presented and everything we chose was absolutely delicious.

“I would not hesitate to recommend this pub and would certainly dine there again. It makes a welcome change to be offered original dishes and local ingredients.”

This person commented: “We were invited by some friends to experience an overnight stay. What a delight it was!! All the staff were extremely welcoming & helpful. Our room was beautifully designed & the bed extremely comfortable.

“Pre-dinner drinks at the bar were chosen from a most extensive range of wines, beers & spirits. But the highlight of the evening was our meal in the restaurant.

"The food was superb, accompanied by an excellent choice of wines. After a good night's sleep, a delicious breakfast set us up for the rest of the day.”
