Darlington road closures this weekend you should know about

Here are the works and road closures you should be aware of in and around the town over the weekend - January 10-11:

Church Row to Close for Sewer Survey

Church Row in Hurworth will be closed on January 11 for utility works. Northumbrian Water will carry out a cleanse and CCTV survey of the sewer outside La Vita and opposite number 34.

These works are considered major, but no excavation is planned. The closure is expected to affect the carriageway for the day.

Parkgate Bridge Traffic Management

On January 11, Northumbrian Water also plans to carry out jetter cleansing and CCTV inspection on the Parkgate Bridge. This will require minor works and the use of multi-way traffic signals to manage movement through the area.

While not a full closure, the temporary signals may lead to short delays throughout the day. 

Ongoing Blackwell Road Closures for Gas Network Works

In Blackwell, significant utility repair and maintenance work by Northern Gas Networks is already underway. The road has been closed from its junction with Bridge Road to Carmel Road South since January 5 and will remain so until April 15.

These major works are being carried out on the footway, carriageway, and verge. The work involves the replacement of old gas pipes, with connections, relays, and transfers taking place along the route.

In addition to this, another road closure on Blackwell is scheduled until January 23, affecting the carriageway.

Works on Coniscliffe Road

Emergency utility repair works by Northumbrian Water are taking place on Coniscliffe Road, adjacent to number 508, from January 7 to January 13.

The urgent nature of the works has led to the use of two-way temporary traffic signals, affecting both the footway, carriageway, and verge.

The aim is to locate and repair a leak on a main pipe, with excavation necessary.

North Road East Back and Holmwood Grove Disruption

Further significant road closures are disrupting travel on North Road East Back and Holmwood Grove.

Northern Gas Networks began work on both roads on January 5, with closures expected to last until January 25 and January 30 respectively. Works here are major and focus on replacing old pipework along sections of carriageway and footway.

On North Road East Back, Northern Gas Networks is replacing more than 40 metres of old pipe, involving multiple connections, relays, and transfers. Similarly, on Holmwood Grove, 104.85 metres of old cast iron pipe are being replaced with modern materials, involving several connections and relays. Both projects form part of a larger programme in the area. 

Long-Term Closures on Local Footpaths

Low Coniscliffe Footpath 8 is closed between December 19, 2025, and June 20, for works affecting the carriageway.

Similarly, Low Coniscliffe Footpath 5 has been closed from January 5 and the closure will remain in place until July 5 as work is carried out on the footway.

Other Ongoing and Planned Works

Elizabeth Place is experiencing a closure of the footway from January 9 to January 13, while John Street in Darlington is subject to a lane closure for urgent water main repairs by Northumbrian Water, running from January 7 to January 13.

Elsewhere, ongoing electrical works are affecting Thompson Street East and Barmpton Lane, with major two-way signals in place for the installation of new underground electric cables.

Both projects are expected to last through to late January or February.
