Drugged-up Hartlepool motorcyclist left man with head injury

Ryan Cameron was picking up a pizza with his mother when Liam Kenny smashed into him on his Yamaha 125 leaving the 20-year-old with serious head injuries.

The 19-year-old drugged-up motorcyclist was due to be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court today (Tuesday, January 7) but the case was adjourned to allow time for more medical reports to be compiled.

Kenny pleaded guilty to several charges when he appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court in November, including causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Tabitha Buck, prosecuting, requested the adjournment after learning further medical treatments were required for Mr Cameron to assess any long-term damage.

The court heard how the young man had suffered several seizures following the crash on May 10, last year and was being assessed for epilepsy in the wake of the significant head injury he suffered.

At the time, Mr Cameron was airlifted to hospital and admitted to intensive care for emergency treatment after he was knocked over on Northgate on the Headland in Hartlepool.

His injuries included a fractured jaw and skull as well as bruising and a bleed on his brain.

Recorder Andrew Dallas adjourned the case to allow time for the medical reports to be compiled and told the defendant he could face a "significant custodial sentence".

He added: “The fact that I am giving you bail cannot be taken as any indication of what sentence a judge will pass next time.”

Kenny, of Miers Avenue, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drink and drug driving as well as having no licence or insurance for the motorbike.

He was released on bail until his sentencing hearing on February 23.
