The ballot for the 2026 AJ Bell Great North Run is now open, giving runners the opportunity to secure a place at one of the most popular running events in the world.
The half marathon, which takes participants on a 13.1-mile route from Newcastle to South Shields, will take place on Sunday, September 13.
The event is expected to attract 60,000 runners from across the UK and around the world.
Paul Foster, chief executive of the Great Run Company, said: "The countdown has started to the 45th Great North Run.
"Every year the whole of the North East gets behind and celebrates the event to create a truly special occasion and 2026 will be no exception.
"The Great North Run is one of the great destination running events with thousands of runners travelling to the North East from across the UK and indeed the world each year.
"It has firmly cemented its position as one of the must do events in the running calendar.
"The January Ballot is one of the final chances to secure a place for 2026 and experience the incredible atmosphere and roaring crowd support for yourself.
"I encourage anyone who is eager to join us to enter now.
"Best of luck to you all."
The ballot will close at midnight on Sunday, January 11.
Applicants will be notified by email whether they have secured a place in the event.
The 2026 edition will mark the 45th running of the Great North Run, and organisers have announced a special collaboration with Newcastle street artist Mul.
Mul’s Running Heart character will feature prominently on the event’s finisher medal and T-shirt.
The Great North Run is the largest half marathon in the world.
Each year, runners raise an estimated £25 million for charities.
The event will be broadcast live on BBC One and in over 170 territories around the world.

This coverage will showcase the North East to a global audience. Participants are encouraged to enter the ballot as soon as possible.
The Great North Run was first held in 1981. It has since grown into a major sporting and charitable event.
The route takes runners from Newcastle city centre, across the Tyne Bridge, and down to the finish line in South Shields.
