£140m Darlington station development on track for Spring 2026 opening

An original December 2025 completion date for the work was pushed back in September due to construction delays and costs.

A major milestone had been reached earlier this month when installation of a new signalling system was completed.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The project remains on target for opening in spring 2026, with work on site continuing to progress well.

“In early December, the new signalling system which will allow trains to stop at the new platforms was successfully installed.

“The structural works for the new platforms, concourse, car park and bridge are also complete, and fit-out work – including the installation of lighting, CCTV, fire alarm systems and other equipment – is ongoing.”

The £140m redevelopment aims to transform the station into a modern transport hub and is one of the biggest transport projects in the town’s history.

The work is intended to improve reliability and capacity on the East Coast Main Line, while also providing better facilities for passengers.

Plans include a new gateway entrance linked to Central Park, a transport interchange, shops and modern waiting areas.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has described the delay as “deeply frustrating” but said the development would provide Darlington with better rail services and the station it deserves.

He previously said: “This is a crucial project for the town and our whole region. It's going to bring two new platforms to unlock better rail services, but also provide the entrance hall, shops and modern facilities Darlington deserves.

“People deserve the station they were promised without any more delays.”
