Residents across County Durham are being reminded of changes to bin collections over the Christmas period.
Collections will take place as normal up to and including Christmas Eve.
Durham County Council has said from Christmas Day until Friday, January 2, 2026 there will be changes to collections.
Changes to bin collection dates across County Durham:
- Thursday, December 25, revised collection date - Saturday, December 27
- Friday, December 26, revised collection date - Monday, December 29
- Tuesday, December 30 - no change
- Wednesday, December 31 - no change
- Thursday, January 1, revised collection - Friday, January 2
- Friday, January 2, revised collection date - Saturday, January 3
Normal collections will resume from Tuesday, January 6. Residents can check their collection dates online by entering their house number and postcode into the ‘My Durham’ section of the council’s website at www.durham.gov.uk.
Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the county will be open as normal over the festive period, between 9am and 3.30pm, except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The Thornley, Coxhoe and Horden HWRC sites are normally closed on Friday's, and will be closed Friday, December 26. The opening hours for these three sites are 10am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 3.30pm on a weekend.
People can see opening times for their nearest HWRC, and check how busy a site is in advance, at www.durham.gov.uk/hwrc.
Real Christmas tree collections will also be available from Monday, January 5. Residents can book a free collection in advance at www.durham.gov.uk/christmastreecollections.
