Bosses have given an update on the construction and possible opening date of a new McDonald's drive-thru in Darlington.

The fast food chain was expected to open its third restaurant in the town in early December but unspecified delays have meant that works are still ongoing.

A large drive thru sign for the American chain has recently been erected on the site, which is expected to open alongside Taco Bell and Costa Coffee.

McDonald's bosses now say their new restaurant will open in early 2026 - but no specific date has yet been confirmed.

A spokesperson said: "We can confirm the restaurant is scheduled to open in early 2026."

This comes more two years after plans were given the green light by Darlington Borough Council to open a string of other venues including a tanning salon, vets, and a ‘bulky goods’ store.

Once open, the McDonalds will join the Lidl supermarket, Home Bargains, and Starbucks drive-thru already open on the estate.

Construction officially began on the major new retail development in March, when heavy machinery and crews were spotted at the site.

The site initially faced setbacks after concerns were raised about its potential impact on local businesses and the town centre - and the decision was deferred in July 2023.

But, following further discussions and reassurances, the plans were officially approved in August 2023. An official opening date for the vendors remains unknown.
