A cafe owner is on a mission to make the venue a 'home from home' for customers after being shortlisted in The Northern Echo’s Best Coffee Shop contest.

Shalona Beaumont opened MJ's Cake Cafe in Middleton St George near Darlington three and a half years ago, and has transformed it into a well-visited spot.

Crediting her regulars for creating a "family atmosphere" at MJ's, Shalona says staff know all of their day-to-day customers by name.

"We have created a welcoming and family atmosphere here at MJ's," she said.

"Since opening three and a half years ago, we knew what we wanted, and that was to create a community in Middleton St George.

"It's a home from home for our customers. People come in to see our staff, have a chat and have some cake and a hot drink.

"All of our staff know our regulars by name and know about their lives, and that's the brilliant thing for having somewhere where all people can come to."

As well as offering a family environment, MJ's is also a family-run venue, with Shalona's daughter working there, and her husband often helping out.

Her best friend Claire, who she knew when they were both nurses, also works at the coffee shop, located on Station Terrace.

"The team is absolutely fantastic," Shalona added.

"We have a great team and have some friendly and familiar faces for the customers."

The owner of MJ's believes that its inclusion in The Northern Echo's Best Coffee Shop 2025 is an "homage to the brilliant staff" and says it's a testament to the venue.

"For us to be included shows how great our staff and customers are," Shalona said.

"Sometimes, village cafes, pubs and venues are left behind. But to be included in this list means a lot."
