Road closures and works are planned across Durham and surrounding areas throughout December.
Road users across Durham should expect a series of significant roadworks and restrictions throughout December, with various closures, temporary lights, and access controls in place on key routes including Front Street, Thinford Road, Low Willington, and several others.
These works are being carried out by a range of organisations responsible for infrastructure in the region.
Frankland Road: Full Closure for Utility Works
Frankland Road is closed for roadworks from November 28, 2pm, until December 1, 11.59pm. The works are being managed by Openreach and involve a full road closure during this period. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes and plan ahead, as delays are likely while these essential works take place.
Sutton Street: Traffic Control in Operation
Sutton Street will have traffic control with a “give and take” system from December 1 at 8.28am to December 10 at 11.59pm. Northern Gas Networks is in charge of these works, which may result in partial delays for both motorists and pedestrians. Careful driving and extra attention to traffic signage are advised.
Low Willington: Multi-Way Signals
On December 1 from 9.21am through to December 2 at 11.59pm, Low Willington will be affected by works managed by Northumbrian Water. Temporary multi-way signals will be in place to manage the flow of traffic while works are underway.
Thinford Road: Multi-Way Traffic Signals in Use
Thinford Road is scheduled for roadworks on December 7, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Northern Powergrid will manage the works using multi-way temporary signals. Delays are probable during working hours as engineers carry out essential maintenance. Road users should consider alternative routes where possible on these dates.
Belle Vue Terrace: Road Closure for Utility Work
A full closure will be in effect on Belle Vue Terrace, beginning on November 28 at 11.16am and running until December 2 at 11.59pm. Northumbrian Water is responsible for these works, which require complete closure to ensure safe working conditions.
Access and Lane Restrictions on Major Routes
Lane closures will take place on the A167 (from B6312 Plawsworth Road Junction to District Boundary) from December 2 to December 3. Durham County Council will use lane closures to manage required works. Drivers should be prepared for possible congestion.
Wheatbottom will also be affected by two-way signal controls on December 2. Northumbrian Water is in charge and will use traffic lights to direct vehicles through the works.

Other Planned Road Closures
A road closure is scheduled for Close House on December 12 with Northumbrian Water overseeing the work.
High Street in Coundon Grange is also set for a night closure beginning December 15 at 10pm and ending December 16 at 6am. Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd will manage this period of closure, which is granted and may impact overnight travel.
A closure on the A68 (from The Lodge to County Boundary at Royal Oak) is planned for December 8, under the management of Borderlink Broadband (Go Fibre) and will be managed with two-way signals.
Event Closures
Road closures will also be in effect for the Durham Christmas Festival from December 5 at 9am until December 7 at 6pm. Market Place, Silver Street, and Saddler Street will be closed to accommodate the event.
