A new restaurant inspired by Bishop Auckland's cultural heritage has opened at a historical hotel site, after the venue underwent a full refurbishment.
The restaurant, named 'Twelve by Jacob', opened its doors on Wednesday, November 20, bringing a 'contemporary yet intimate' dining experience to the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland.
The refurbished interior boasts modern features mixed with historical references, creating a warm welcome for locals and visitors alike.
The design of the venue is inspired by Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran's Jacob and his twelve sons - paintings inside reflecting Bishop Auckland's tradition of 'cultural openness and preservation'.
General manager Callum McCartan, along with the culinary team, has developed a food and design concept, reflecting the theme with an evolving seasonal menu and an exclusive wine list.
Guests can expect a contemporary menu including Korean fried chicken, game suet pudding, skate wing, poached pear sponge, and more.
Callum said he feels Twelve by Jacob "brings together heritage, creativity and deep respect" for the market town's history.
"We wanted to build a space that feels welcoming and modern," he added.
"It's a place for locals to enjoy and feel proud of and for visitors to experience something genuinely special to Bishop Auckland."
The opening marks The Auckland Project's continuing mission to use art, culture and heritage to drive regeneration in the area.
After it was thought that the Jacob and His Twelve Sons painting might be lost when a church commission sought to sell them, they were placed into a charitable trust, and the idea for the restaurant was launched.
Jane Ruffer, CEO at The Auckland Project, said: "The story of Zurbaran paintings is one of preservation, belief and opportunity for Bishop Auckland. Twelve by Jacob continues that journey by bringing the town's heritage into everyday experience.
"Food has always brought people together, and here it becomes a way of celebrating the remarkable culture and history of this town."
Located just outside the town centre, once home to the Prince Bishops of Durham for centuries, Park Head Hotel opened on February 1, 2023, after the former 18th century coaching lodge was given an extensive refurb.

The hotel now comprises 38 bedrooms and the Twelve by Jacob restaurant, with walking routes and world-class attractions right on its doorstep.
Earlier this month, the site was given a five-star rating for service. It also retained its sought-after breakfast award.
