The popular supermarket chain has long been on the wishlist of residents, but despite rumours circulating over the years, Percy Pigs haven’t quite yet arrived in the town.
But this week, M&S has launched a target location list, with 500 areas across the country identified for new or bigger food stores… and one is Yarm.
Councillor Andrew Sherris said it was an “exciting prospect”: “We’ve been after Marks and Spencer or similar now coming to Yarm for a number of years.
“It’s an exciting prospect, and we’ll certainly work with agents to both find a site and encourage the process.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said he had been meeting with the company for some time: "M&S expanding their footprint in Teesside is only good news for our area.
"We’ve been meeting with the company for some time and consistently making the case for why Teesside is the right place to invest — so I’m delighted to see that work paying off.
“Whether it’s for picky bits or Percy Pigs, this move will inject life into these areas - boosting other businesses around them.
“My waistline could well suffer but our local economy certainly won’t.”
M&S is looking for prominent and highly visible sites - more than two acres in size - located at the edge of town centres or out of town with easy access to major roads.
Other locations on its hit list for new or bigger stores include in Bishop Auckland, Consett, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Guisborough, Northallerton, and Thirsk.
M&S said it currently looking to double the size of its food business, with 20 stores opening or renewing before the end of this financial year.
It now wants to expand the size of its food stores to stock a fuller range and attract more customers to do their weekly shop.

Alex Freudmann, managing director of M&S Food, said: “The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth.
“With more than twenty stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster.
“Our team wants new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best shopping experience, range and availability for our customers.”
