When Radio 1's Big Weekend rolls into the North East in May next year, it won't be the first time the festival has been held in the region.

Radio 1's Big Weekend will be held at Herrington Country Park, Sunderland, on May 22, 23, and 24, 2026 and will see some of the biggest names in music come to the North East and kick off festival season in the UK.

It is the first time since 2019 that Radio 1's Big Weekend will be held in the North East.

In 2019, the event was held in Middlesbrough and brought stars such as Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi, and Charli XCX to Stewart Park in the town.

Around 64,000 people attended the event and saw stars like Ellie Goulding, Little Mix, James Arthur, Rita Ora, Stormzy, Anne-Marie, Mumford and Sons, and The 1975.

At the time, Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills described Miley Cyrus as "a megastar – she was amazing."

Here are some pictures of the festival back in 2019:

Lewis Capaldi thrilled music fans by going undercover to serve in a Greggs bakery in a full Greggs uniform, including a hairnet, while claiming to be on work experience.

He served up breakfasts, coffees, sandwiches, and bakes before word got out that Capaldi was serving at the Stokesley Road outlet, close to the concert venue in Stewart Park.

Fans flocked to meet him, and he chatted with people before belting out an impromptu acoustic performance in front of the shop.
