County Durham and Darlington were battered by heavy rain today leading to flooding and road closures.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for County Durham for rain from midnight Thursday (November 13) to 11am the same day.
Downpours also hit Darlington with one of the worst affected areas for flooding being Stanhope Road, particularly with the junction of Abbey Road, near QE Sixth Form College.
Pictures show large amounts of standing water on the road. Duke Street was also badly affected, with cars having to slow down. Flood water was also creeping onto the pavement, forcing pedestrians to cross the road.
The flooding on Stanhope Road and Abbey Road also affected two basement flats and a commercial property. There were also reports of sewage being in the water, as Northumbrian Water was also onsite.
Fire crews were also spotted working in the area.
A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to Stanhope Road at 9.25am to the flooding of two basement flats and one commercial premise.
“We are liaising with Northumbrian Water, who are in attendance, because there are reports of sewage in the water. We have two fire engines and an officer on the scene. We are working collaboratively to address the issues.”
Elsewhere in the town, there was heavy flooding near the mini roundabouts on Cleveland Avenue and Elton Road.
Areas of Staindrop Road and Coniscliffe Road were also hugely impacted by flooding. Broken Scar also burst its banks, due to the heavy rain.
Darlington Borough Council reassured residents they were working to alleviate the flooding.
A spokesperson said: “All available staff were out last night, and are working today, to alleviate the floods. We have a regular programme of gulley cleaning, but we have experienced exceptionally heavy rain in the last few days.”
Areas of County Durham also saw road closures.
Stony Bank in Willington was closed by Durham Police.
The force said: “It is wet out there so please take care if you’re out and about.
"There has been heavy rainfall in the past few days in some areas, resulting in increasing amounts of surface water.
"Stony Bank, Willington has been closed due to flooding. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the foreseeable future."
