The long-awaited Wynyard Retail and Trade Park has reached a major milestone, with construction now complete and the first wave of stores opening their doors to customers.
Developed by Northumberland Estates, the multi-million-pound scheme at Wynyard Business Park, Stockton, is fast becoming one of the North East’s newest retail destinations, and shoppers won’t have long to wait for its biggest arrival yet.
Sainsbury’s is set to open its new supermarket on Wednesday, November 13, joining Starbucks, Screwfix and JT Dove, which are already trading on site.
Howdens is also preparing to open later in November.
Northumberland Estates confirmed that all units in Phase One of the development have now been handed over for fit-out following the completion of construction earlier this autumn.
Peter Dalby, Development Manager at Northumberland Estates, said the handovers mark an important step for the project.
“We’re pleased to announce the completion of Phase 1 at Wynyard Retail and Trade Park, with all units now handed over for fit-out,” he said.
“This milestone reflects our commitment to creating a high-quality retail and trade destination that supports the local economy, attracts nationally recognised occupiers and generates significant employment opportunities.”
The first phase of the development provides 48,000 sq ft of retail space and 344 parking bays just off the A19, offering easy access to Teesside and County Durham.
Sainsbury’s will anchor the site, complete with an Argos outlet inside the store, while Starbucks, Screwfix and trade supplier JT Dove have already started welcoming customers.

The development, described by Northumberland Estates as a “premier location in the Tees Valley”, is part of the wider Wynyard Business Park masterplan and is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to the area.
Attention has already turned to Phase Two, which will add another 66,000 sq ft of retail space, a 79,000 sq ft trade park, and more than 200 additional parking spaces.
Five units remain available to lease, though the developer says there has already been “strong interest” from potential tenants.
