TV presenter Dan Walker has shared glowing praise for one of the North East’s most historic pubs, calling its Sunday roast “one of the best you can get your hands on”.
The former BBC Breakfast and Channel 5 News host spent the half-term weekend with his family exploring Northumberland and North Yorkshire, and took to social media to tell fans about his stay at the Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland.
Walker described the centuries-old inn as a “wonderful place to stay – surrounded by history”, adding: “They also boast one of the best Sunday roasts you can get your hands on, and it didn’t disappoint.
"The staff were lovely, the welcome was warm, and the surrounding countryside is just gorgeous.”
During his North East break, the broadcaster also visited Lindisfarne, learning about the castle’s Edwardian restoration by Country Life magazine founder Edward Hudson and architect Edwin Lutyens, and enjoyed a stop at Bamburgh Castle before rounding off his trip with fish and chips at The Fish Shack in Amble.
He added, “We live in a truly beautiful country.”

His praise comes just days after The Lord Crewe Arms was featured by The Times among the 25 most irresistible autumn escapes in Britain, recognised for its fireside comfort, rich history and “atmospheric” moorland setting.
Built from the stones of Blanchland Abbey, the inn dates back to the 12th century and once sheltered Jacobite leader General Tom Foster behind its great fireplace during the 1715 rebellion.
Today, it’s celebrated for its warm hospitality, hearty food and “truly wonderful” service — boasting a 4.4 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor.
