A woman was taken to hospital after a crash closed the Nevilles Cross interchange in Durham overnight.
Police closed the road around 1.30am on Sunday (October 26) while officers and paramedics attended.
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed a woman, who was on foot at the time, was taken to hospital at the RVI after being hit by a car. She suffered injuries to her head and chest.
Emergency services were in attendance throughout the night, with radar tracking showing the police helicopter circling the area at about 2am. The road reopened around 7am.
Olivia, 22, a Durham University student living at Nevilles Cross, told the Echo: "I saw the police cars and ambulance but had no idea what was going on.
"Me and my housemate were up watching to try and see what was happening but we couldn't understand why there were so many police about."
Video shared online shows emergency vehicles blocking the crossroads with blue lights flashing in the early hours.
A spokesperson for NEAS said: "We were called at 1.54am this morning for a pedestrian who had been involved in a collision with a car at the junction of Newcastle Road and Darlington Road in Nevilles Cross, Durham.
"We dispatched two paramedic ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a doctor and a duty officer to the scene. They treated one patient with injuries to her head and chest before taking her to the RVI in Newcastle."
The condition and the seriousness of the woman's injuries is not currently known. Durham Police has been contacted for updates.
A 58-year-old woman who lives off the crossroads told the Echo: "I heard a lot of noise up the road and saw a few police cars. I didn't know what it was but I assumed there had been a crash because that kind of thing happens a lot at this junction.
"There was one a few weeks ago so it doesn't surprise me."
Another resident said: "I did see the woman who I think got hit. She was on the floor with loads of people and paramedics around her."
Meanwhile a man living in a nearby property said the incident looked 'pretty serious'.
He added: "I'd just gone to sleep and it woke me back up. I heard a load of sirens outside so I went out to see what was going on.
"There was a lot of cars in the junction; police, ambulance, the lot."

Durham Police's roads policing unit previously urged members of the public to refrain from speculation.
They said: “Out of respect for those involved, and all who attended the collision at Neville’s Cross this morning, we request that speculation regarding this incident is kept to a minimum.”
