Top Darlington and County Durham schools in this years GCSE's

The Department of Education have released the top performing secondary school data.

The provisional data, which is subject to change, shows how well each high school performed in the Year 11 exams.

Tanfield School has emerged as the top performing secondary in County Durham in this year’s GCSE results.

The Stanley school led the way with 84 per cent of pupils passing English and maths at grades 9–4.

It was closely followed by Carmel College in Darlington with 81 per cent and St Leonard’s Catholic School in Durham with 80 per cent.

Durham Johnston Comprehensive also impressed with a 78 per cent pass rate while The Academy at Shotton Hall in Peterlee and Sedgefield Community College both recorded 77 per cent.

At the other end of the table Wyvern Academy in Darlington posted the lowest pass rate with 45 per cent, followed by Greenfield Academy in Newton Aycliffe on 47 per cent and UTC South Durham on 48 per cent.

Across the county, schools in Darlington and Easington showed mixed results. Hummersknott Academy achieved a 74 per cent pass rate while Easington Academy matched that figure. Seaham High School recorded 59 per cent and Dene Academy 52 per cent.

In the Bishop Auckland area Teesdale School and Sixth Form led with 72 per cent, ahead of St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College and St Bede’s in Lanchester, both on 68 per cent. Bishop Barrington Academy was the lowest in that area at 49 per cent.

The figures, published by the Department for Education, are provisional and show the percentage of Year 11 pupils achieving grade 9-4 passes in both English and maths during the 2024/25 academic year.
