Three bakeries in Northumberland have been named among the best in the UK for 2025 – are they your local?
Grants Bakery, Sweet Solstice and The Northumbrian Bakehouse have been shortlisted at the National Bakery Awards 2025, alongside with the likes of Bank Top Bakery and Number Eight Bakehouse in Darlington.
These North East bakeries are part of the county nominees and will be hoping to be crowned the best in Northumberland and County Durham, respectively, next month.
In total, 87 bakeries from every region in the UK have been revealed in a mega list by the awards organisers.
3 Northumberland bakeries named among best in UK for 2025
Grants Bakery in Corbridge is an award-winning craft bakery established with the mission to become the “best quality bakery” in the North East, according to its website.
Master baker Andrew Cotterell has a "prestigious" former client list that includes the Gleneagles Hotel, Grosvenor House and even the Royal annual garden party at Holyrood Palace.
Known for their continental breads and “unique” cake selection, customers have hailed Grants Bakery a “little goldmine”.
Someone added in a review on Tripadvisor: “Had the largest selection of cakes and savouries, something for all tastes.
“The service was quick, polite and really helpful.
“The coffee and cake was excellent, they know how to present a shop and how to make the food look so delicious only problem to the choice is so good I really struggled to keep it to one cake each.”
Another shared: “Fabulous variety of bread, bakes and patisserie. Great for a treat and to sit and enjoy the village square. A definite destination in Corbridge.”
Elsewhere, The Northumbrian Bakehouse in Kirkharle is a small artisan bakery that has been creating delicious treats for more than 40 years, including traybakes, shortbread, and butter biscuits.
On Google, one customer commented as part of a review: “Have just indulged in the best shortbread I have ever tasted, thank you, it is lush.”
A second person praised: “Fantastic shortbread and great customer service. Give them a try.”
This fan of The Northumbrian Bakehouse wrote: “Triple chocolate shortbread is delicious!”
Meanwhile, although Sweet Solstice in Alnwick is nominated for best bakery in Northumberland at the National Bakery Awards this year, the business is now “permanently closed” according to its Instagram and Google pages.

The final will take place at Big Penny Social in London on November 25.
All 229 nominees will come together for a night of celebration, culminating in the announcement of county and regional Winners.
Other honours to be awarded on the night include Social Enterprise Bakery of the Year, Young Baker of the Year, Outstanding Contribution to Bakery, and the ultimate prize – National Bakery of the Year.
