Colin Cheng Chinese Takeaway in Middlesbrough set to close

Colin Cheng’s Chinese Takeaway has been serving "amazing" oriental dishes from its home at Marton Shops in Middlesbrough since opening the doors in 1983.

But owners Colin and Yvonne Cheng have this week announced that after “many wonderful years” they will be retiring, meaning the shop will close.

The news from the venue - which has long been regarded as one of Middlesbrough's best takeaways - has left regulars "gutted".

The final day for Colin Cheng's will be Friday, October 24.

Once the lights are turned off inside Colin Cheng's for good, Colin, now 74, and Yvonne, 66, plan to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation, spend time with family, and travel abroad.

Their daughter Sophie said it was hard to pick just one memory from their 42 years serving "absolutely fantastic" oriental food.

She told The Northern Echo: "The inspiration and support from loyal customers has motivated Colin to maintain his passion this entire time.

"He loves being in the kitchen and he's devoted to providing his customers with delicious food, so his retirement is with great reluctance, as this is what he does everyday.

"This will be a significant loss for him and Yvonne, and they will miss their interactions with customers too.

"Colin is 74-years-old, he'll need to look after himself and needs his well-earned retirement; as for Yvonne, she deserves a good rest too.

"They both earned it and both worked really hard."

A statement posted online on behalf of the Cheng family said: “After many wonderful years, we will be permanently closing our doors as the owner is retiring.

“Our last day of business will be October 24, 2025. 

“We extend our deepest gratitude for your loyal support and patronage over the years. It has been a true pleasure serving you. Thank you for everything.” 

There has since been an outpouring of support and sadness regarding the news online, which customers are marking the “end of an era”. 

One person said: “Best Chinese Takeaway in Middlesbrough! It will be sorely missed. Thank you for your great food over the years and happy retirement.”

Another added: “I'm actually so sad. I feel like they were a part of my childhood.”

Nunthorpe councillor Mieka Smiles also said the news had “tugged at her heart” and thanked the team for “being such a staple of the community for so many years”.
