The Gate submitted plans to Darlington Borough Council earlier this year to revamp an upstairs room and add a new staircase.
The Blackwellgate venue wanted to create a “more comfortable, relaxed atmosphere" in a space where punters could "enjoy a drink and chat with background music”.
The proposals also included replacing "tired" windows and modernising the front by adding new Juliet balcony railings and wood grain cladding.
Last week, council bosses approved the planning application, so long as the works are carried out within the next three years.

As previously reported, the plans showed how new stairs would be added beside the downstairs entrance lobby to allow for the change of use on the first floor.
The new lounge space is also set to feature its own bar, with access to the already existing male and female toilets.
The ground floor areas will continue to operate as normal.
