Restaurant Babul’s in Darlington and Barnard Castle wins award

Multi-award-winning Babuls, which has restaurants in Darlington and Barnard Castle, has now been recognised for its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

The restaurant, well-known for its work in the community, said it is proud of employing staff from a wide range of backgrounds and that winning the award "means a great deal".

It has now been crowned SME Business of the Year at the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Awards 2025.

It was singled out for its outstanding commitment to inclusivity, community engagement and social responsibility.

The annual EDI Awards celebrate organisations and individuals who promote fairness, opportunity, and respect in both the workplace and wider society.

A spokesperson from Babuls said: “The award-winning restaurant group employs staff from a wide range of backgrounds, faiths, races, and sexualities, reflecting the diversity of the communities it serves.

“Its workplace culture is built around teamwork, empathy, and belonging, ensuring every member of the team feels valued and supported.”

Beyond its restaurants, Babul’s is known for supporting local initiatives including Darlington FC Women’s Team, Barnard Castle Golf Club, Wyvern Academy’s Pupil of the Month Award, and local athletes Hannah Robinson and Rachel Steedman.

This December, the restaurant is hosting a free Christmas Day meal for the homeless, lonely, and vulnerable, as part of their ongoing tradition of giving back to those most in need.

Managing Director, Shuhel Ahmed said the award carried special meaning at a time when division and uncertainty are often in the spotlight.

He said: “Winning this award means a great deal to us, especially when the world can feel divided.

“As a father, I worry about the messages my children see and hear, with unrest and protests creating fear where there should be understanding.

“At Babul’s, we want to show that community, respect, and friendship can bridge any divide. No matter your background, faith, or identity, everyone deserves a place at the table.”

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Babul’s continues to champion diversity and uniting people from all walks of life through shared experiences, culture and community spirit.
