A County Durham restaurant that was previously handed a one-star hygiene rating has closed its doors, but is set for a fresh start under new management and a new name.
Little Sicily, on Sedgefield High Street, closed on Monday, September 22, with the team confirming the move is not permanent.
In a statement, the restaurant announced it will soon reopen under new leadership, with rebranding and “exciting plans for the future.”
The venue, which built a reputation for serving hearty Italian classics including pizza, pasta, risotto and burgers, faced serious criticism last year after hygiene inspectors discovered a string of issues during a July 2024 visit.
Among the findings were rodent droppings behind the bar, “filthy” floor coverings, dirty extractor canopies, broken or poorly-repaired wall and floor coverings, and food being improperly stored.
Inspectors also raised concerns about a lack of food hygiene training for staff and the absence of a documented food safety management system.
Following a revisit on July 18 last year, inspectors noted some improvements, including cleaning behind the bar, but highlighted that further work was needed, such as repairing fixtures, removing exposed brickwork, and dealing with a hole above the pizza oven.
The restaurant was then awarded a three-star hygiene rating in November last year after inspectors returned again.
Despite these challenges, Little Sicily remained a popular spot, drawing loyal customers who praised its food, lively atmosphere, and accommodating staff.
The business also carried a strong 4.4-star Google review rating at the time of closure.
In its closing announcement, the restaurant thanked customers for their support and promised to return with a new brand identity and a renewed focus on creating a venue for “life’s special moments”, including birthdays, anniversaries, and parties.

The Sedgefield site has no connection with Little Sicily Durham, which is separately owned and operated.
For now, the High Street location is closed, but diners can expect its revival in the near future, as a fresh chapter begins for the restaurant.
